Leaky Brain Syndrome

brain.jpg

Are you been experiencing memory problems, trouble concentrating, brain fog, or constant anxiety? We talk a lot about leaky gut and the complications that result from this condition. However, a similar problem can happen in the brain. There is a clear connection between your brain and digestive system.

Blood-brain barrier leakage means that the brain has lost its protective means, the stability of brain cells is disrupted and the environment in which nerve cells interact becomes ill-conditioned. These mechanisms could eventually lead to dysfunction in the brain.”

— Dr. Walter H. Backes, Maastricht University Medical Centre

What is Leaky Brain Syndrome?

Your brain houses your memories, your communication and language skills, and your ability to move your body. It also controls automatic functions such as breathing, body temperature, and heartbeat. Your brain is one of the most vital parts of the body, performing important functions, and it needs serious protection.

Despite the brain’s incredible superpowers, there are instances when the brain, as well as the Blood Brain Barrier—or BBB—can be compromised. Leaky brain happens when the protective BBB is breached and naturally occurring substances cross through the walls of the vessels to the brain.

What are the Symptoms of Leaky Brain Syndrome?

The following are common signs of Leaky Brain Syndrome:

  • Headaches

A headache is one of the common signs of a leaky brain. The headaches are unexpected and severe. Studies also revealed that pain associated with these headaches is more intense especially when a person is standing.

  • Cognitive Decline

This includes memory loss and can happen for various reasons, such as from blood brain barrier dysfunction. Studies have revealed that this dysfunction can contribute to the cognitive decline that is often observed in individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.

  • Chronic Fatigue

Leaky brain syndrome can lead to tiredness that does not go away even with rest or sleep. It has been discovered that the change in BBB’s permeability may resemble the continuing symptoms and signs of chronic fatigue syndrome.

  • Depression

The breakdown in BBB is often observed in patients with serious psychiatric illnesses, such as schizophrenia and depression.

Causes of Leaky Brain Syndrome:

  • Systemic inflammation
  • Oxidative stress
  • Autoimmune disease
  • Chronic psychological stress
  • Infections
  • Head trauma
  • Poor diet and food additives
  • Disrupted circadian rhythm
  • Intestinal permeability (leaky gut syndrome)
  • Excess alcohol consumption
  • Environmental toxins and heavy metal

If you are suffering from leaky gut, you are more prone to leaky brain syndrome. Things such as gluten and other known food allergies that damage the villi of the small intestine may eventually damage the blood brain barrier, too. Drug and alcohol abuse also poses risks to BBB permeability.

Infections, environmental toxins, and stress also take their toll on the blood brain barrier. There is a substance in the body known as Zonulin that determines the brain and the gut's permeability. Studies revealed that consuming gluten tend to increase Zonulin levels within the body, resulting in elevated permeability on both barriers. This is also common for individuals with gluten sensitivities to develop both leaky brain and leaky gut.

A healthy, properly-functioning blood-brain barrier is critical for optimal brain and mental health. In order to effectively treat leaky brain, it is important that any issues concerning the gut are addressed due to the connection between the brain and the gut. Gluten must be eliminated from your diet since this increases the permeability of tight junctions, resulting in a broken down BBB.  Food sensitivities are often linked to the inflammation.

Many individuals suffer from leaky brain syndrome.  If you are at risk for developing this, you need to protect your brain. You should embrace a healthy lifestyle and engage in activities that promote ideal mental health. If you have been diagnosed with leaky brain syndrome, however, there are many effective treatments today that you can consider.

HEAL YOUR GUT Programme

You can start making healthful changes to your diet and lifestyle straight away. Add more vegetables that contain Sulforaphane to your plate. Sulforaphane is a phytochemical found in cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, brussels sprouts or cabbages. Some studies have shown that Sulforaphane can prevent breakdown of the blood-brain barrier, reduce permeability of the blood-brain barrier, and improve cognitive function after stroke and traumatic brain injuries.

Add more natural anti-inflammatory foods to your diet. Add resveratrol to your diet, which is a beneficial antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compound found in grapes and raspberries. Pterostilbene is a compound found in blueberries and is very similar to resveratrol, and it has also been shown to protect the blood-brain barrier by reducing oxidative stress. Choose curcumin from turmeric, probiotic (fermented plant-based) foods, healthful plant-based fats like omega 3 fatty acids (which your body cannot produce itself), from hemp, flax, sunflower and chia seeds, plus walnuts.

Make sure that you're getting sufficient Vitamin D, B Vitamins (B12, B6, and B9), magnesium (spinach, chard, pumpkin seeds, almonds, avocado and bananas, plus epsom salts baths), also reducing stress and getting enough sleep.

Toss out inflammatory foods, like white flour, sugar and other processed carbs can damage both brain and gut. Avoid alcohol, and acetaldehyde – a byproduct of alcohol metabolism – can also contribute to leaky brain.

Also reduce your exposure to any environmental moulds and EMF's (electromagnetic fields) where possible.

I have no doubt in my mind that, at the present time, the greatest polluting element in the Earth’s environment is the proliferation of electromagnetic fields.” - Dr. Robert Becker, Nobel Prize nominee

Getting to Grips with Raw Plant-based Clean Eating...

100% Clean, organic and raw plant-based... Join Sistahintheraw's Love Your Body Clean Eating

100% Clean, organic and raw plant-based... Join Sistahintheraw's Love Your Body Clean Eating

It’s simple really, imagine a long crisp leaf of iceberg lettuce, filled with a savoury sprouted grain pate, and topped with sliced radishes & cucumber, with a handful of chia sprouts and perhaps a couple of slices of avocado, or maybe your favourite creamy raw dressing! Yes, you’ve got it!

That’s it, there’s no meat, no fish, wheat, gluten, dairy or genetically modified (gmo) food. This is the raw food model of clean eating, it’s about eating green, non-processed, natural, freshly made, organic, plant-based, raw, living, 'real' whole vegan food.

A plant-based diet is one that consists of foods that come from plants. Food in its original, fresh, ripe, raw and unadulterated state contains naturally occurring enzymes which aid in digestion.

For most people on the planet, our first experience of raw living foods was provided through our mother’s milk. The immeasurable health value of breast milk is because it is a “human-specific” pre-digested food, designed especially to nourish our young.

Some groups may want to convince you that raw clean eating is a fad diet, but they probably know very little about it and may be either mis-informed or even uninformed. There are numerous testimonials and scientific studies clearly outlining the benefits to be gained from making the choice for plant-based veganism!

The most important thing to note about eating clean, raw, plant-based vegan food, is that it is a way of life and NOT a diet!

It’s important to know that cooking (heating) denatures food. Lifegiving and healing nutrients are heat sensitive. On average, the cooking process destroys 50% of the minerals and fiber, 75% of the protein and vitamins and 100% of the hormones, oxygen, phytonutrients and enzymes in food. Cooking also renders food toxic by creating free radicals through a process call glycation.

As long as you eat a diverse range of raw plant-based whole foods, you will be able cover most your nutritional bases.

If you have experienced regular bloating, gas, digestive discomfort, constipation, irritability, allergies etc. clean eating can help you with these health symptoms as they have for me.
I have found that in following a clean, raw, plant-based diet, there has been a great improvement with my digestive issues, resulting in my increased energy levels and which has of course contributed to a more positive mind-set. Raw plant-based foods also help to alkalise the body, reduce acidity and have less chance of fermenting in the gut and causing inflammation or other related autoimmune reactions.

The best “nourishment creates strength and the more aware we are of our own nutritional needs, the stronger we will become.

When your are beginning the raw plant-based food lifestyle yo,u may be wondering where your essential nutrients will come from.

Importantly, in order to properly nourish your body, you will need to create meals from scratch, while eliminating inflammatory foods, like refined salt and sugar, alcohol, processed food, bread and canned food. This is a preventative approach to health and wellbeing. Raw plant-based food diets mostly supply more nutrients because they supply some nutrients and proteins very simply and easily. You can eat more raw plant-based foods in a balanced way by following these simple steps (below). In addition, raw plant-based food diets sometimes include a few lightly cooked veggies.

It is essential to eat a richly diverse, clean, raw plant-based diet that include:

  • probiotic foods
  • sea vegetables
  • fermented foods
  • sprouted seed and grains
  • soaked nuts and seeds
  • organic fruit and vegetables
  • cold-pressed juices
  • cold-pressed oils
  • healthy fats
  • herbs and spices

These foods will provide you with most of the essential nutrients your body needs, like protein, calcium, minerals, vitamins and ........... At each meal, plan around a large main salad, a small amount of lightly cooked veggies can also be added if required.

Some time ago, it was believed that vitamin B12 supplements were essential for old people, but new studies have shown that they are essential for every age group. You should therefore add a good quality, non-syntheic vitamin B12 suppliment to your clean eating dietary strategy.

Raw fruits and vegetables can be hard to digest for some people lacking certain enzymes or digestive capabilities and because they’re high fiber diets. If this is the case for you, try adding probiotics and digestive enzymes supplements to your diet to support this process. Essentially, it is also important to thoroughly chew your food before swallowing to support your digestive process more fully.

Simple Tips to Apply at Home
Use these tips to introduce your family to the power of a raw, whole, plant-based food diet:

  • Clean out your kitchen of anything that is in a bottle, can, bag, box, or jar that does not have to be refrigerated.
  • Read the labels, any food products that have artificial preservatives added, and has a long expiration date should also go, along with any animal products, junk food, processed food, soda, sweets, coffee, cooked food, sweets/candy, biscuits/cookies etc. These are inflammatory foods.
  • Learn how to make delicious raw vegan recipes. You can attend local classes, or you can try out the recipes in Sistahintheraw’s free downloads, on the website or in the Love Your Body Clean Eating programme.
  • Based upon the new raw vegan recipes you like the best and want to practice more, stock up your larder and refrigerator with fresh, whole, ripe, raw, organic produce, nuts, seeds, and herbs.
  • Drink plenty of clean water, along green juice and wheatgrass daily: see my Creating Wellness One Green Juice at a Time blog.
  • Implement proper food combining: Combining foods properly is key for optimal health and aids in digestion.
  • Share a big, fresh salad as the “main course” of every meal. Learn how to make delicious, healthy homemade salad dressings from my recipe e-books.
  • Learn how to grow your own sprouts at home! It is easy, economical, and fun! Kids love to get involved in sprouting. And, you are feeding yourself and your family the most nutritious food on the planet.

One last point, take your time and don't rush into change, some studies have shown that it can be challenging to maintain lifestyle changes without adapting the foundation needed to make an on-going commitment to them.

Green Drinks? The Basic's about Oxalates

A fresh juice per day, will keep the nasties at bay —Sistahintheraw

It's Day 1 of Sistahintheraw's Juice Club, which I set up because I totally believe in the energising and healing benefits that fresh green juices have to offer. I have experienced this first hand, for myself over the years and I have witnessed the healing results as a student while studying at The Hippocrates Health Institute.

However, I am also aware that not every so-called healthy food or drink is suitable for everyone, especially depending on the quality of your health and accompanying mental state at any particular juncture in your life. This can also include some plant-based raw foods and green drinks. The theory around bio-individuality can be important here in helping to determine a person's specific, individual nutritional and physiological needs. In any case, 'too much' of almost anything can be a not such a good thing for many people.

Oxalic Acid basics:
Like enzyme inhibitors, plants produce oxalates because they don’t want to be eaten alive by insects! While these molecules can cause health issues for humans, it actually tears up the teeth of insects which try to eat high oxalate foods. These anti-nutrients serve to protect a plant food, but can also be problematic once we consume them; however some of them may even help to protect us from disease. Oxalic acid is present in various plant foods, depending on the area where they are grown.

An Oxalate is a molecule which, under certain circumstances, links up with calcium and crystalizes. Oxalates can interfere with or decrease calcium absorption. When too much oxalates  crystalize in human tissue, it can create arthritis-like symptoms and even kidney stones. It is important to eat a low oxalate diet if you suffer from conditions such as kidney stones or kidney conditions, have leaky gut, inflammatory issues like asthma, arthritis or fibromyalgia, have taken antibiotics frequently or for long periods of time, have some food sensitivities/allergies, have fat mal-digestion, or have had part of your intestine removed. A food is considered high in oxalates when it has more than 10mg of the compound per serving.

Oxalates include some leafy greens, berries, fruits and vegetables high in vitamin C, some nuts and seeds, coffee, tea and chocolate. Although not a major concern for everyone, it is still important to rotate your green veggies, have a wonderful variety of foods in your diet and not be too focused in any one thing.

Some of the plant-based foods high in oxalate include for example: spinach, green beans, rhubarb, kidney beans, soy, sweet potatoes, strawberries, raspberries, tangerines and kiwis. You can find lots of food guides and lists about oxalates on the internet.
Unless you are prone to any of the conditions mentioned above, you would otherwise do well to maintain eating a widely varied and balanced plant-based diet.

You can still have your green drink just change to a low oxalate veggie's IF you have a problem with oxalates.

If in any doubt about your health in relations to green drinks, please consult with your nutritional health advisor and or your doctor.
